John Herd Thompson, Professor Emeritus of History at Duke University and a former member of the American Council for Québec Studies, has died.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1946, Thompson earned his Ph.D. from Queens University (1975.) After teaching at McGill University, Thompson joined the history department of Duke University in 1989 and taught there until his retirement in 2012.  He taught courses on the history of Canada, North America, and agrarian movements and trained a large number of graduate students, particularly in Québec and Canadian history, some of whom went on to hold leadership positions in the ACQS. While at Duke, Thompson also served as chair of the history department and director of the Canadian Studies Program.
